George, David, and Us

You sent for me, sir?
Yes, Clarence. A man down on Earth needs our help.
Splendid. Is he sick?
No, worse. He's' discouraged.

If you are familiar with the movie It's a Wonderful Life, then you probably recognize this exchange. It is between two angels preparing to help George Bailey, a man who has experienced several crushing disappointments in his life. Until this point, he has refocused and pressed forward, but this time is different. To George, it seems that he is being consumed by a situation that he cannot escape. But that's not all. Those other disappointments have come roaring back to his mind, and they are weighing him down, taking away his will to fight.

Discouragement is a powerful emotion. It can be a truly dark place to sit. Discouragement can become a lens – foggy and foul – through which everything is viewed. Even good things can lose their meaning when viewed through discouragement.

Joanna Snow Ministries is located in Downtown Mobile, Alabama, and we love it!

This week, we are looking at one of the anchor buildings of Downtown Mobile. This landmark, currently undergoing exterior renovation, was built in 1891 as the home of Zadek Jewelers. The same architect and owner group (Rudolph Benz/Abraham Spira and Abraham Pincus) who created our office’s building had teamed up on this beauty. Its address is 1 Royal Street, and it sits across Royal from the Van Antwerp Building, previously featured in our newsletter.

The original building looked a little different, and it has gone through more than one facelift in the past 130 years.

This picture from the mid-Twentieth Century shows signage of the Three Sisters clothing store. Many still refer to the building as that.

I like that: “Three Sisters.” It brings to mind unity and love. Maybe it is because I am an only child, but I like to think of sisters living in unity, taking care of each other, supporting each other through the trials of life. If you have a sister (or brother or friend) that you can depend on, you are blessed! If not, rely on the Lord, and you may ask Him to send someone your way. As mentioned in the blog above, discouragement is painful and powerful. We need people to encourage us, and we should keep our eyes open for those around us who need to be encouraged. A little smile and a kind word can go a long way!

Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up. But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.
Ecclesiastes 4:9,10
