There is so much to be pulled from a picture. Notice the trolley tracks in the street? That's something we don't have anymore. The integrated crowd? I was surprised by that, considering historical discussions about the time. Did you notice that many people were wearing either light jackets or no jackets at all? I did a little research and discovered that the year this picture was taken, 1927, was the hottest year on record for the state of Alabama. However, one of the most compelling images that caught my eye was the presence of airplanes — specifically, biplanes. Yes, Mobile has a proud, productive relationship with Airbus here nearly a hundred years later. But when this picture was taken, the world was not even 25 years beyond the Wright Brothers' first flight. The young man in the first plane cart seems to be wearing a military uniform, although "bomber planes" in World War I were planes from which the pilot dropped bombs over the side of the cockpit, a far cry from what we see today. But, in the 1920s, airplanes were the wave of the future and were permeating society, and they had captured the imaginations of children. Let's be aware of what captures our imaginations. Some things are curiosities and knowledge that can improve us as people or allow us to help improve society. But even with something as integrated into our culture as airplanes, there are pros and cons. For example, one person's positive point about global travel could be turned into another's negative point concerning pandemics. Being able to ship goods across the country, although very convenient, also creates a large carbon footprint.
So as we move into 2022, let's ask God where we should focus. With a devotion to prayer, worship, and Bible study, we can have a serious discussion with the Lord about how to approach the upcoming year.
