Guest Post: A Father’s Tale

With much joy and excitement I get to share a guest post from my husband. I hope you enjoy the words from his perspective….

A Father’s Tale

By: Benjamin Snow

Do you remember when Peter Pan had grown up and forgotten how to fly in the movie Hook? He finally remembered his “happy thought”, which made him young-at-heart and full of life again. What was his “happy thought”? To become a father.

Becoming a father is a defining moment in a man’s life. At some point, you are forced to take a hard-long look at yourself in the mirror. Perhaps you’re starting to notice that you’re acting just like your parents did towards you. These patterns are so engrained in us that it is automatic, similar to riding a bike or driving a car without having to think about it. If you haven’t already, I encourage you to take this long-hard look at yourself now. Examine everything and write it down. I’m not talking about your daily schedule or what you had for lunch. I am talking about mapping out your day, your interactions, and how it made you feel; specifically in regards to your children and wife. Go even deeper and lay out the motives you had in doing what you did today. Be brutally honest. No use hiding anything, God knows anyway. Now, hold this under the light of scripture and see where you are. How are you parenting? If you’re unsure, or don’t think that God’s Word doesn’t say anything about parenting, it’s time to do some re-reading. Scripture has SO much to say about parenting. My own first step after doing this was defending how I did things throughout my day, even though it was against what God says to do. That was my pride, and God resists the pride, but gives grace to the humble.

Perhaps you’re like me and you needed to let God touch the different areas of your life that were injured and full of pain. Death of a parent, divorce, abandonment, abuse (physical, verbal, emotional, sexual), etc. To say these things deeply affect you is a profound understatement. Any one of these injuries will have a lasting impact that spreads to every aspect of your life whether or not you choose to acknowledge it. I faced the question, “Why do bad things happen to good people” all throughout my life. I have come to realize that there is no real answer to that question. That was not the answer I wanted from God. When facing the emptiness of this answer, I found such scriptures as:

“For I know that plans I have for you, says the Lord, to give you a future and a hope.”- Jeremiah 29:11

“God works all things together for good to those who love Him and are called according to His purposes”- Romans 8:28

And Joseph saying, “What you (his brothers) intended for evil, God intended for good to accomplish what is now being done, the saving of many lives”- Genesis 50:20

Let these truths marinate in your soul. Write them on your bathroom mirror and say them to yourself as you get ready each morning. These are only a few of the many verses that speak of what God says about you.

Being a father is the greatest responsibility, next to your marriage, that God has given you. But think about this…God gave it to you. He chose YOU to be the father of those children. Providing food on the table and a roof over their heads isn’t being a father. Is that all God does for you? He listens to you, He speaks to you, He forgives you, He protects you, etc. The kind of father He is to you is the kind of father He wants you to be to your children.

Something to ponder…

Look up what God says about you. What is your identity in Christ?
